2011 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition Will Have 3-D Video

Look, I’m gonna’ be honest here folks, I’ve never once purchased a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. Have I ever thumbed through one of them at a friend’s house? Sure, of course I have, and ultimately I think that’s probably why I’ve never thought to pick up a copy on my own. Oh yeah, there’s also that whole “I can look at fully nude women on the internet for FREE, thank you very much” factor that comes into play –slightly.

Well, for 2011, SI is unveiling a whole new gimmick to try and scheme our wallets. Along with next month’s edition of the sporty yank mag, a special tie-in 3-D swimsuit video will also be released. Yes, that’s right, now you too can sit at home and watch beautiful women almost get naked as they almost leap out of your 1987 RCA.

The 30-minute 3-D video will be available February 15 — when SI rolls out the print issue — for rental or purchase on Playstation 3, and for rental on Video on Demand powered by Qriocity via Sony’s 3-D-compatable 2010 and 2011 Bravia HDTVs and Blu-ray Disc players. The 3-D video will be $7.99 to buy and $4.99 to rent. A 2-D version will go for $6.99 and $3.99, respectively. [Mashable]

With Sports Illustrated selling fewer hard copies of their swimsuit issue, each year, and their online web downloads, of the same editions, climbing -it makes sense to try and meet the demand for content, though this whole 3-D TV business just seems kind of shlocky for the time being. Then again, this is all coming from a bitter, half blind guy who can’t journey into the 3rd dimension.
